Key Maintenance Steps for Crane Wire Rope

Proper wire rope handling and storage directly affect service life, safety, and lifting performance. Below is a practical guide covering transport & unloading, storage requirements, and the key features of Zhongying wire rope.

1) Wire Rope Transportation and Handling

Correct Method

When lifting or moving a wire rope coil/reel, the load must be supported through the reel center hole:

• Insert a lifting sling through the reel’s center hole, or

• Insert a steel pipe through the center hole first, then place the lifting slings on both ends of the pipe.

This method prevents deformation of the reel and avoids damage to the rope surface.

Incorrect Method (Strictly Prohibited)

• Do not use a forklift to directly lift the reel by its outer surface.

• Do not roll or drop the reel directly from a truck or any elevated position.

Improper handling can cause:

• reel damage,

• surface gouges or scratches on the wire rope,

• loose winding and tangled rope.

2) Wire Rope Storage Guidelines

Step 1: Choose a Proper Storage Location

Store wire rope in a well-ventilated, spacious indoor area, separated from damp ground. Avoid:

• direct sunlight,

• heat exposure (hot air / baking),

• lubricant dripping onto the ground (keep the area clean and controlled).

Step 2: Keep Away from Corrosive Materials

Do not store wire rope near or in contact with corrosive substances, such as:

• acids,

• alkalis,

• other corrosive or damaging materials.

Step 3: Outdoor Storage (If Unavoidable)

Wire rope should not be stored outdoors. If outdoor storage is necessary:

• elevate the reel using bricks or wooden boards, and

• cover it securely with a waterproof rain tarp.

Step 4: Long-Term Storage Inspection

If the storage period is long, perform one appearance inspection per year.

• If rust is found, unwind the rope for inspection, remove corrosion, apply oil, and rewind the rope properly.

• If wire rope has been stored for more than one year, it must be tested again before use. Only ropes that pass testing should be put into service.
